Wang Yi: My Declaration of Faithful Disobedience

Pastor Wang Yi (王怡) of Early Rain Covenant Church (秋雨圣约教会), along with more than 100 of the leaders of the church, has since December 9th 2018 been apprehended by the Chinese authorities and charged with various crimes including the crime of sedition. In knowledge that he could be arrested at any time, Pastor Wang Yi had prepared a letter stating his stance on the truth of Christianity and against the unlawful (against God's law) persecution of the Chinese church by the Chinese authorities. The letter can be read here in English.

Here is the excerpt which I had read to conclude the sermon I had preached today:

... I believe that this Communist regime’s persecution against the church is a greatly wicked, unlawful action. As a pastor of a Christian church, I must denounce this wickedness openly and severely. The calling that I have received requires me to use non-violent methods to disobey those human laws that disobey the Bible and God. My Savior Christ also requires me to joyfully bear all costs for disobeying wicked laws.

But this does not mean that my personal disobedience and the disobedience of the church is in any sense “fighting for rights” or political activism in the form of civil disobedience, because I do not have the intention of changing any institutions or laws of China. As a pastor, the only thing I care about is the disruption of man’s sinful nature by this faithful disobedience and the testimony it bears for the cross of Christ.

As a pastor, my disobedience is one part of the gospel commission. Christ’s great commission requires of us great disobedience. The goal of disobedience is not to change the world but to testify about another world.

For the mission of the church is only to be the church and not to become a part of any secular institution. From a negative perspective, the church must separate itself from the world and keep itself from being institutionalized by the world. From a positive perspective, all acts of the church are attempts to prove to the world the real existence of another world. The Bible teaches us that, in all matters relating to the gospel and human conscience, we must obey God and not men. For this reason, spiritual disobedience and bodily suffering are both ways we testify to another eternal world and to another glorious King.

This is why I am not interested in changing any political or legal institutions in China. I’m not even interested in the question of when the Communist regime’s policies persecuting the church will change. Regardless of which regime I live under now or in the future, as long as the secular government continues to persecute the church, violating human consciences that belong to God alone, I will continue my faithful disobedience. For the entire commission God has given me is to let more Chinese people know through my actions that the hope of humanity and society is only in the redemption of Christ, in the supernatural, gracious sovereignty of God.

Sacrifice and suffering

We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. (Heb. 13:10-15)

I have watched the growing hostility to Christianity in Singapore. Slowly by slowly, more and more attacks have been made against Christians expressing their faith, and intolerance of the Christian religion is on the rise.

As someone who grew up in a genuinely tolerant country, I admit I have not been prepared for this. Disagreements and conflicts have been verbal, which is fine. But to think that one day I may have to answer for my faith in the same way as Christians in Iran and Syria has not been something I have not thought of.

We in Singapore have been too complacent. While most of the rest of the world's Christians suffer persecution from the hands of their countrymen, we have been tolerated for a long time. We are not prepared for persecution. We have no conception of paying for our convictions in institutional discrimination, nevermind in blood. What has been the cost of following Christ in Singapore before? Mocking? Ridicule?

The time of tolerance is coming to an end. Soon, the evil intent in the hearts of Man to suppress God's truth will work itself out. It may take 10 years, 20 years or more, but I fear for what is to come.

In Hebrews, we are called to go with Christ outside the camp, bearing His reproach. Here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. As we come before God, increasingly persecuted for our beliefs, may we turn to Christ. See Him who bore reproach for dying cursed on the tree for us, He who was rejected by His own countrymen, who sentenced Him to death by crucifixion. Our Lord was rejected by His own people, those who were supposed to know the Scriptures. How much more we think that we should be accepted by our countrymen?

May God use this trial to purify His Church, which has grown complacent and fat. May God remove the chaff and strengthen His people. Let us repent of our complacency and compromise, and turn to Him for our all.

NUS CCC asked to cease activities

The intolerance and bigotry of so-called "tolerance" has struck. National University of Singapore has ordered Campus Crusade of Christ to cease its activities because some people were offended about what Christianity teaches. In other countries, such activities will make the university liable to be sued for religious discrimination, but in Singapore, who cares?

Book Recommendation: When the Wicked Seize A City, by Chuck and Donna McIlhenny

In the midst of my busyness, I decided to read this book which I have recently bought. With an eye-catching title, I however wasn't sure what was the exact content of the book. Having read it now, I am of the opinion that this should be a must-read book for Christians who are now still in this world.

When the Wicked Seize A City by Chuck and Donna McIlhenny goes through the struggles of Chuck McIlhenny and his family as they pastor an Orthodox Presbyterian Church in probably the most immoral cities in the world: San Francisco. It details the outright persecution and hatred the Homofascists have against Christians, and the Homosexual agenda that aims to subvert and destroy the family, and society with it. The death threats, hate mail, and even one arson attack on his house in which the house was set on fire in an attempt to silence him. All this is in "tolerant" San Francisco, where much is tolerated but the Gospel is certainly not.

If one wants to see how homofascists with power work to ram their agenda down everyone's throat, and the proper Christian response to it, check out this book. When the wicked indeed seize a city, you will see that standing for Christ will cost a lot. 2 Tim. 3:12 still remains as Scripture, and violent persecution of Christians exist even in the mirage of "Christian America."

Homo-bigots set to drive Christians destitute

If one wants to know the depths of bigotry and depravity the homosexuals are capable of, look at this case in the United Kingdom.

Christian hotel owner Hazelmary Bull has certainly had her faith tested to the limit this week. ... In a landmark ruling, which will have far-reaching implications for many Christians in Britain, Judge Rutherford ordered the Bulls to pay civil partners Martyn Hall, 46, and Steven Preddy, 38, £1,800 each in compensation for refusing to allow the couple to stay in a double room at their hotel.

The gay couple, IT workers from Bristol, sued the Bulls for £5,000 in damages under the Equality Act (Sexuality Orientation) Regulations 2007, after they were turned away from seven-bedroom Chymorvah House, near Penzance, in September 2008.

The Bulls argued that, as devout Christians, they let their double rooms only to heterosexual married couples and that their beliefs prevented them from allowing same-sex couples to share a double bed - although gay couples could stay in single or twin rooms.

This week, however, the judge ruled that the Bulls’ actions amounted to direct discrimination, on the grounds of sexual orientation, as there was ‘no material difference between marriage and civil partnership’.

Their lives are now in turmoil. Hazelmary is adamant that she and Peter will not compromise their religious beliefs, despite the court ruling. As a result, they have two options - face prosecution again by refusing to book double rooms to gay civil partners, or close the business.

And if they close the business, which is already in debt, then they can’t afford to stay in their home.

Last I heard, if homosexuals were to do their perverse sexual acts at home or even in hotels, nobody would do anything to them. Yet we can see here the hatred and bigotry the homosexuals have against any who do not want to take part in their perverse lifestyle.

It is not enough to "tolerate" the sodomites. No, what these bigots want is that everyone must join them in celebrating their perversion. If you refuse to celebrate their perversion, they will sue to force you to do so.

If that doesn't sound like fascism, nothing is. And that is why we must not give even an inch to the homosexual agenda. These people will not settle for anything less than domination over society. If any of them claim to be working for freedom and toleration, that is a lie. Their only interest in to promote intolerance of any who do not celebrate homosexuality, in the name of "tolerance" of course.

Do pray for the Bulls as they face persecution for their faith.

Homofascism in Britain

Homosexuality: a sexual attraction to (or sexual relations with) persons of the same sex

Homosexual Agenda: A movement which seeks to make homosexuality not merely tolerated but accepted and even celebrated, and for all dissenters (especially Christians) to be silenced

Fascism: a political theory advocating an authoritarian hierarchical government (as opposed to democracy or liberalism)

Homo-fascism: a socio-political theory/movement advocating the authoritarian enforcement of the homosexual agenda by force, especially through the abuse of legal means in the government

Over in Great Britain, the homofascists have struck. As part of their immoral agenda to force everyone to if not celebrate at least accept their depravity, a homosexual police officer has thrown a Christian preacher into prison because he had mentioned that homosexuality is sin. Please pray that God will be with Dalph McAlpine and comfort him, and that He will have mercy upon that police officer and save him from his wickedness and sin.

Oh Lord, come quickly.

Persecution of Christians...

Here are two news of Christians undergoing persecution, one in a supposedly secular non-discriminatory Singapore, and the other in supposedly Christian America.

It has been reported previously that a couple, ONG Kian Cheong and his wife Dorothy CHAN Hien Leng, were charged for sedition under the Sedition Act in Singapore for distributing booklets deemed to be offensive to Muslims. Recently, the couple has been convicted by the Court as being guilty of sedition. The hypocrisy is simply amazing. As I have shown in a satire, the supposedly non-discriminatory Singapore government seemingly has no problems with the showing of the blasphemous Da Vnci Code movie, in which Christianity was insulted. I wonder if anyone were to similarly charge MDA under the Sedition Act, would we see a guilty conviction or would the court instead throw out the case immediately?

In "Christian" America, a couple, Pastor David and Mary Jones, was ordered to halt Bible studies conducted at their home by the San Diego County unless they pay thousands of dollars for a permit to do so. The couple has decided to contest the ruling, failing which they would sue the county in a federal court.

As the end time draw near, the persecution of Christians continue to grow in earnest. Let us pray for God to be with our persecuted brethren that He may comfort them in their trials, and that they will witness for Him despite their hardships.

November 18, 2008

Last Friday night (11.14.08) our team of thirteen people, mostly ranging from eighteen to twenty-two years old, left the house around 5:30pm to head to the Castro District as we have done for the majority of Friday nights for the past three years. Over the course of the week we had actually been out in the Castro every night, singing and worshiping in the neighborhood. This night we arrived at Castro and 18th Street, with one guitar to simply worship and bring the presence of God to the Castro District. We understood that since Proposition 8 had passed it would seem instigating to talk with people, so we decided to only play the guitar and sing rather than to engage with anyone on the streets.

Our intention was not to stir up anger, but to worship Jesus on the streets the way we had worshipped there for the past three years. As we were worshiping a man approached us and began yelling "You are haters! Get out of here!" A girl on our team simply told him "We are only here to worship God. We love you." This man became angrier and was screaming at her using profanity and obscene language. When he noticed that we were standing in front of a memorial that had been dedicated to an AIDS/HIV activist he became even more enraged. We had stood on that particular street corner numerous times when there had been a memorial and it had never been an issue before this night. She continued to answer him "We are only here to worship God. We love you and Jesus loves you," and eventually he left the street corner. A police officer then came and asked us how long we would be out there. We told him until nine o clock and he said "ok" and left.

Our team continued to sing as a young man approached us. He stood near by until another man joined him. He was wearing a headdress, which led us to believe that he was affiliated with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. This man in the headdress began to surround us with a cloth and shoving us to encircle us fully with the cloth. He wanted to do this so that people on the outside could not see us. While this was happening the other man instigated to people walking by that we were the "Yes on 8 people". When in reality, we were only doing what we had always done at the Castro since before proposition 8 was even in sight. This was not a proposition 8 event.

At this point our team was standing in a circle holding hands singing "Amazing Grace." While they were holding the cloth around us someone from the crowd threw hot coffee over the cloth and it hit our team, including splashing two of our girls in the face and one on her head going down her back. At first the girls thought it was boiling water until they smelled that it was coffee.

During the event people lunging through the crowd to get at us hit a couple of our girls in the face.

Then a man picked up one of our Bibles and started to walk away with it. A girl from our team walked out of the circle after him and said, "Excuse me that is our Bible. Could I have that back please?" He turned to her and said "no" then hit her on the head with the Bible knocking her to the ground, then began kicking her legs. A man from the crowd pulled him off of her. A police officer then came and detained the man who hit her. One officer asked the girl on our team if she would like to press charges. She said "No. Tell him I forgive him."

A couple of the people who were holding the cloth around our team walk up to her and said "We are sorry that happened to you." and "He is not with us." referring to the man that hit her. Then the man who had been responsible for making the crowd think we were there concerning Proposition 8 said to her "I'm glad to see that you're feeling better, but let that be a lesson to you not to come here."

At different points throughout the night one girl on our team had her camera and was able to film some of what was happening.

The crowd around began to grow as people started to scream "Shame on you! Shame on you!" over and over. They were yelling all kinds of obscenities and cursing us. That is when one of the young men who was with us called the police department to let them know what was happening. It was difficult to say how many people were surrounding us due to the chaos of the situation. We were trying to focus on worshiping rather than the masses, but we would guess anywhere from 200 to 500 people. One of the girls then stepped out to see how the girl who got hit was doing. And as she rejoined the team singing, she overheard a few men saying things like "we should grab them." As well as "yeah we should grab their butts." At that point we realized that it was climaxing into a really hostile situation.

Then it seemed like out of nowhere hundreds of whistles were being blown in our ears. Around that time someone removed the cloth which enabled the crowd to enclose around us turning the situation into what resembled a mob frenzy. The people in the crowd were shoving us against the wall blowing the whistles in our ears so close that we could feel the spit from the whistles hitting our faces. Around that time we began to sing "Oh the Blood of Jesus." Things grew more intense and the crowd came in closer around us shoving and pushing us. Some men from the crowd began grabbing a few of the young men on our team inappropriately, sexually assaulting them and trying to take down the pants of one of them. When that began the young men with us quickly pulled all the girls into the middle so that no one could get to them.

The intensity of the mob around us grew until finally the police had to shove the crowd off of us and they made a wall between the crowd and our group. There was one moment when a man from the crowd around us pointed out Roger, the leader of our team, and said, "I'm going to kill you!" An officer overheard and said to him "What did you say!?" The man said "nothing." And the officer replied, "I heard what you said."

Then one officer said to Roger "Do you want to leave?" and he replied, "We would like to stay" because we knew we had the freedom to be there. A few minutes later as the crowd was growing quickly the officer said to Roger "I am sorry, but we need to get you out of here because we fear for your life, you no longer have a choice." Roger turned to our team and explained that we were going to honor the police and follow them. The officer came back, asked us where we were parked and told us we would be moving out in five minutes. At that point there was somewhere between 15 and 25 police officers. They surrounded our team and escorted us to 20th and Eureka Street where our van was parked. As they were escorting us to our van the crowd followed our team and continued to scream and threaten us. They even threatened to follow us all the way home. As we were being escorted out a man with a news camera showed up and began filming us. (Later we found the footage on KTVU, a local news station in the Bay Area) They had reported that we were doing a religious march regarding Proposition 8, when in all actuality we were being escorted out of the Castro. Realizing the hostility of the people who were still following us, and their threats to "follow us all the way home" we covered our license plate with post-it notes that a guy on our team had in his wallet. We did this so that they could not identify our vehicle later. We then loaded our entire team into the van and drove home. The time when we left was 8:30.

In closing, though this event was one of the scariest moments in our individual lives, because of those who have died in America to purchase freedom, we felt in this situation we were to stand firm and not be intimidated out of our rights. Furthermore our faith in Christ calls us to be willing to die for the sake of the gospel, and we are not to sacrifice for the sake of comfort or a false peace. Though the American church has not often been tested in this, these days seem to be upon us. We love the LGBT community and we do not believe that everyone in this community is filled with hate or anger. What happened on Friday night was different than what we have ever encountered. We forgive those who assaulted us physically and sexually. We forgive the anger and threats of violence against us. Our desire has always been to be a bridge to bring the love of Jesus.

Persecution in Canada

Question: How do you persecute a Christian in a "christian" country?

Answer: Prosecute them under "hate-crimes" law.

Look at the ridiculous stupidity of the Canadian government here. The "Alberta Human Rights Commission" have ruled against pastor Stephen Boissoin and The Concerned Christian Coalition Inc, and all because he [gasps] protested against the promotion of homosexuality to five year olds.

One wonders what manner of pea-brained bigots are ruling Canada right now. As it is written,

When the righteous increase, the people rejoice, but when the wicked rule, the people groan. (Prov. 29:2. Bold added)

Anyway, please pray for the growing persecution that will be coming on the Church in the Western world. Pray for Pastor Boissoin that he will continue to stand for God even as he prepares to appeal to a real, non-kangaroo court of law. Pray that the peace of God will be with him and that, regardless of the final ruling, he will not recant but will be able to joyfully stand with the apostles in saying

Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard (Acts 2:19b-20)

Amen. May our Lord get the glory through the suffering of His saints.

Some news on the persecuted church

If one member suffers, all suffer together; ... (1 Cor. 12:26a)

I would like in this post to focus some attention on the persecuted church. Most of us in the developed world today are too comfortable in Churchianity, and cannot understand the verse 2 Tim. 3:12 where it states that 'Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted', having never felt much persecution ourselves I guess. Of course, the fact that most Christians in the developed world are not facing persecution but are instead being lauded by the world (including people such as Rick Warren I may add) is very disturbing, noting that it is Jesus Himself who said:

Remember the word that I said to you: ‘A servant is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will also keep yours. (Jn. 15:20)

If we are not experiencing persecution in some form or another therefore, can we be said to be truly following Christ? After all, since if they persecute Christ, they would persecute Christians [p → (C ⊂ P)], and those who call themselves Christians are not facing persecution (⊄ P), and Christ is indeed persecuted (p), therefore those people are not living as Christians (~C).

Here is an article of the persecution faced by a Muslim convert in UK (a developed country btw):

A British citizen who converted to Christianity from Islam and then complained to police when locals threatened to burn his house down was told by officers to “stop being a crusader”, according to a new report.

Nissar Hussein, 43, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, who was born and raised in Britain, converted from Islam to Christianity with his wife, Qubra, in 1996. The report says that he was subjected to a number of attacks and, after being told that his house would be burnt down if he did not repent and return to Islam, reported the threat to the police. It says he was told that such threats were rarely carried out and the police officer told him to “stop being a crusader and move to another place”. A few days later the unoccupied house next door was set on fire.

In other news, North Korea Former Security Agents Tell of Infiltrating Christians:

BANGKOK (Compass Direct News) -- Former police and security officers in North Korea told a U.S. government body that their superiors had instructed them to play the role of Christians and infiltrate "underground" prayer meetings in order to incriminate, arrest, imprison and sometimes execute believers in North Korea.

According to one agent, punishment varies according to the person’s activity – “whether he was active or in hiding. The fact that a person keeps a Bible means that this person plans to believe in a religion in the future … The most severe punishment is applied to those who are engaged in the [new religious] activity: those who carry the Bible from China and those Christians who help North Korean refugees in China.”

As one refugee testified, “My relative by marriage was caught while giving away a Bible, so the entire family was taken to Prison 22 [a penal labor camp]. They were taken there under the category of religious spy.”

One repatriated refugee was sent to an NSA prison in North Hamgyeong province for 15 months. He described his prison experience as being “an animal without a name. It’s up to the condition of the guards. Because killing a prisoner will do no harm for them.”

The 'Holy Land' doesn't seem to be that holy after all. See The Persecuted Messianic Jews of Israel:

Of late, there has been considerable noteworthy news coming out of the land of Israel concerning our persecuted and fogotten Messianic brothers and sisters in the Lord, much of which has been written about right here on this site. ...

In my personal research I also found that the persecution by the orthodox toward the Jewish believers in Jesus as Messiah of Israel comes in the way of causing them to lose their employment so they will be unable to support themselves and or their families, severe intimidation tactics, continuous [sic] public harassment, threats, having their congregations taken over by the ultra orthodox, looked upon as second class citizens and the like. I can actually say it made me think of the persecution the pharisee Saul of Tarsus dished out toward the believers of his day before he was converted to Christianity.

Come May 8, Israel Independence Day, the State of Israel celebrates its 60th birthday. Several celebrations are being held around America and many other parts of the world; and in Israel itself, on May 7th, a spectacular display of lights via laser will light up the skies of Israel that will be viewed by citizens all over the land of Israel including Beersheba, Haifa, Netanya, and various other cities and towns.

While Israel is celebrating its 60th Independence Day, let us remember to lift up our persecuted brethren in Israel who are continuously harrassed by the various unbelieving orthodox Jewish sects of Israel. Let us keep them in our prayers and ask the Lord Jesus to help us find ways to do good unto the household of faith in Israel as the Scriptures say.

And it is heartening to see that VOM (Voice of the Matyrs) have picked up the story of the persecution in Singapore:

On April 14, two charges were lodged against a married couple for distributing a Christian publication in Singapore in March and October of last year that allegedly cast the Muslim prophet Mohammed in a "negative light." Ong Kian Cheong (49) and Dorothy Chan Hien Leng (44) are charged under the Sedition Act for "promoting feelings of ill-will and hostility between different races or classes of the population of Singapore." Cheong and Hien Leng were also charged under the Undesirable Publications Act, which defines "objectionable" material as an item which depicts "race or religion in such a manner that the availability of the publication is likely to cause feelings of enmity, hatred, ill-will or hostility between different racial or religious groups." The couple was alleged to have been distributing an evangelistic tract entitled "The Little Bride." Pray the charges against Ong and Dorothy will be dropped. Pray the Holy Spirit will cause them to forgive their persecutors. Pray for continued opportunities for Christians in Singapore to share the truth of Christ. John 15:18-19, John 14:1

So let us continue to pray for our persecuted brethren. For as 1 Cor. 12:26a states, if one part of the body suffers, all suffer with it. Amen.

ALERT! Singaporean Couple Charged For Distributing "Seditious" Evangelism Tract

Couple charged under Sedition Act

A COUPLE were charged on Tuesday with distributing a seditious publication to two others.

Ong Kian Cheong, 49, and Dorothy Chan Hien Leng, 44, are alleged to have distributed The Little Bride, an evangelistic material, to Sembawang resident Irwan Ariffin last Oct 19.

They are also said to have distributed the same publication to one Madam Farharti Ahmad at her home in Woodlands on March 6 last year .

It is not clear why they face the Sedition Act and the Undesirable Publication Act when the publication is the same.

Ong, who works in a telecommunications company, and his wife, a bank employee, were represented by Mr Selva K. Naidu.

The police prosecutor sought an adjournment of the case pending a Health Sciences Authority on handwriting specimen.

The couple were freed on $10,000 bail each. Their passports were impounded.

The case will be mentioned on April 29.

Under the Sedition Act, the maximum penalty is a $5,000 fine and/or a jail term of up to three years.

The maximum penalty under the Undesirable Publication Act is a fine of up to $5,000 and/or up to 12 months.

Now, it may be true that the tract they are using is illegal (Chick tract) so the most they should be charged under the Undesirable Publication Act. Even obnoxious behavior is no legitimate grounds for being charged under the Sedition Act. So what exactly is going on here?

The only thing that may be 'objectionable' is that they are reaching out to Malays. However, this is a lame excuse. It must be remembered by all Singaporeans and the government that the Singaporean Constitution guarantees Freedom of Religion. Lex Rex! The government is NOT above the Constitution.

Anyway, time for action. Please pray for this couple, and the growing hostility towards biblical Christianity in Singapore (and around the world too). Pray that God will use the rising tide of persecution to purify His bride, and that God will use this case to slowly awaken the Church from her slumber.

Disclaimer: I am in no way suggesting that I condone their methods or even the tracts. What I am find very disturbing is that they are charged under the Sedition Act while they are in the process of evangelising others. This is not a good sign.

Article: Death threats can't stop her from being a Christian

This article ought to put us to shame. An iman's daughter in UK is threatened with death by her family and yet she remains firm in her faith, resolved that she is not afraid to die for her Lord.

Persecution of Christians in Iran increasing

The fascist regime of Iran recently increased its persecution of Christians in the country. Please do pray for our persecuted brethren, that God will strengthen them in their time of distress and need, and that they will continue to stand strong as a witness for Christ, conquering the devil by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and love not their lives even unto death for the sake of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (Rev. 12:11).
