Personally, I think the concept of “separation” of church and state is fairly misunderstood. Yes, the state should not interfere with the rule, polity, and functions of the church. But the state is indeed ordained by God to uphold “justice” and to punish “lawlessness.” The concepts of justice and lawlessness have to do with the Moral Law of God, which is transcendental. Even the heathens have the innate ability to judge between the governance of say Nazi Germany and that of the Allies.
There is indeed some merit for Christians to influence the policies of the State. That being said, I am not suggesting that everyone should strive to better the likes of Ian Paisley.
