The misnomer called Homophobia

I hate to be sucked into this mess, but I am starting to get fed up with the propoganda of the homosexuals.

The first thing I want to start with is that there is no such word as 'homophobia'. The whole word is a misnomer. Homophobia is *supposed* to mean an irrational fear of homosexuals / homosexuality. The main word here is irrational. However, is the fear of homosexual(ity) really irrational?

When people oppose homosexuality, there would typically be lots of possible arguments they would advance to support this position of theirs. Thus, the fear of homosexuality is not irrational on the surface. Of course, however, people could very well use such arguments as a smokescreen to hide their 'phobia' of the thing itself. (Definitely, homophobia can never be used against those who have thought through the issue rationally) However, is that the case with homosexuality?

Now, it may be granted that there may be some people who have not thought through their opposition to homosexuality, and perhaps they could legitimately be labeled as having 'homophobia', but is that really the case?

In Scripture, it is written:

The wrath of God has been revelaed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who in unrighteousness suppress the truth, for what can be known about God is plain to them, for God has shown it to them. .... ... For although they knew God, they did not honor Him as God or give thanks to him, for they became futile in their thinking and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they becme fools, ...

For this reason, God gave them over to dishonorable passions. For their women gave up natural relations with men for those that are contrary to nature, and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another; men committing indecent acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error. (Rom. 1:18-27)

I have exposited the verses in a previous post, but suffice it is to say here that homosexuality is feared because God has already shown it to be unnatural. All who fear homosexuality, whether they validly thought through the reasons why they do so, do so out ot the common knowledge of morality given to all Man by God Himself. Thus, there is no such thing as an irrational fear of homosexuality, and the entire misnomer has been shown.

Before going any further, let me say that the reason I use Scripture, even though most homosexuals and their symphatizers detest the Scriptures, is that I am a presuppositionist. I am NOT going to give up my presupposition to pander to the worldview of the homosexuals, as they too have their own presuppositions which they would not give up. Let God be true, and every man a lier (Rom. 3:4). Since God created all, all Man, even the homosexuals themselves, know deep in their hearts that what God says about homosexuality is correct, and they are wrong. Therefore, I based on epistemological foundation on the Word of God itself, and it will be a sure and strong foundation for my position.

Since that is the case, the word 'homophobia' has bee shown to be a misnomer, a word coined by the homosexual movement to blackmail the rest of humanity emotionally.

However, for argument's sake, let us suppose that this phenomenon of 'homophobia' does actually exist. What then?

Well, there are other phobias present in this world, for example, acrophobia (or the fear of heights), claustrophobia (or the fear of enclosed or confied space) etc. Now, what do we do when we see people who have such phobias? Do we punish them by having such phobias? Do we put them in jail? Call them hateful? Oh, but people are not involved? How about sociophobia then? If people are suffering from phobia that affects their relation to society, are they fined, imprisoned or subjected to character assisination? No! Yet, if homophobia is indeed real, why is it that those who are supposed to suffer from it are ridiculed, imprisoned, fined, and otherwise shouted down? If it is indeed real, shouldn't the homosexuals have compassion on these people and try not to aggregate their conditions by openly and publicly parading their 'affections'. Even if the condition is detrimental to others and society in general, shouldn't the person be send for counseling and therapy instead of being punished by the law?

The reason why this is so is because the homosexuals are indeed bigoted and are just using this word as part of their arsenal of 'weapons of mass emotional blackmail' (WMEB). If they truly believe that this word 'homophobia' as being adequately describing those who oppose them, they wouldn't insist on punishing those who label their actions/orientation etc. as evil (legally or otherwise), nor would they deride them, but instead would choose to curtail their own rights so as not to cause emotional torment in the 'homophobes'. That they choose to utilize this word shows their hypocrisy and duplicity!

  1. Hello Daniel...I've read on your blog for a while but decided to come out of the lurk-mode after reading this post..and, reading Vincent's comment.

Vincent I have to agree with you. That was my first thought on reading Daniel's post, why not introduce another few new words, like heterphobia, or necrophobia, etc?

    The list would be endless!

So would the laws grow against those discriminating against those who practice such deeds.

A dog show it would indeed become...

Before the return of Christ, we may witness what today seems improbable, for what I see today, was unthinkable 30 years ago.

If you happen to read this, know that I will NOT tolerate any violation of the rules of this blog. No vulgarities for instance. Your attempted comment have proven by itself the total bankruptcy of the sodomite position, if you have to resort to using expletives and blasphemous remarks.

The entire claim here is based on a doubly flawed basis. First, just because someone believes a word or a term to be a misnomer, does not mean that word or term does not exist. Secondly, the definition of "homophobia" does not always include "irrational fear" and the primary point of the definition is that it leads to aversion, discrimination, fear, contempt, prejudice or antipathy towards homosexuals or homosexuality. In the four most common definitions, only one (Webster's) uses the desriptive "irrational." (definitions below). What are people afraid of? Are they going to catch homosexual coodies? Is a homosexual going to sneeze at them and make them homosexual?

As Christians, we are supposed to first and foremost follow the teachings of Christ over anyone else. Christ said not one word in condemnation of homosexuality. Not a single word.

Here are the definitions (note if it wasn't a word it wouldn't be defined in the dictionaries.)

  5. Jim:

I am using the word homophobia as being derivative of the the prefix homo- and the suffix -phobia. The word phobia has traditioanlly being used as referring to a medical condition of irrational fear of something. Yes, the word homophobia may be found in dictionaries, but I'm sure you know that this word is a recent addition. The fact that the word has been defined to include 'prejudice against homosexual people and homosexuality' as defined by WordNet shows a redefintion of the word from its original meaning as determined by the addition of the prefix and suffix.

The reason why this word is a misnomer is because it has been used as a tool of mass emotional blackmail. Just shout 'homophobia' and the person who advances his cause against the position is always wrong, no matter whether his position is logical or correct. If you want to redefine terms like how WordNet does, then could I invent a new word for you called 'Christianphobia'? Could I label people like Christopher Hitchkins with that term and demand that he stop his 'hate speech'? When you (plural generic you) redefine the suffix phobia as per WordNet, then I can invent a whole lot of new words for you to play with, i.e. Necrophiliacphobia, Paedophiliacphobia, Incestphobia, or how about 'Homophobephobia' or 'Christendomphobia'? This stupid semantic games played by the militant homosexual lobby and her liberal allies must end, otherwise everyone would be a '-phobe' of something. And if you say that some phobias are right and some are wrong, I will insist you give me a non-circular and non-self-defeating criteria of how to define which '-phobia' is right and which is wrong.

Regarding the treatment of homosexual people, I would definitely agree with you that we should not discriminate against homosexuals, if by 'discrimination' you mean treating them as subhuman species. However, if by 'discrimination', you mean that they must be given equal treatment in society, i.e. 'gay marriage', then I'm sorry, you don't have an idea what you are talking about. For everything, there are criteria to be fulfilled. I.e. if you don't make the grade, you can't say that you were discriminated for not being shortlisted for getting into American Idol, especially if you are plainly not good enough. Similarly, if homosexuals don't match the criteria, they have nobody to blame, and to call it discrimination is just plain ridiculous. And no, I am not afraid of being sneezed at by homosexuals. I can get along with them, as long as they do not oppress me and expect me to obey their every whim and fancy.

Regarding your assertion of Christ and homosexuality, I would have to say that you are wrong. Very wrong indeed! Christ is the Word (Jn. 1:1) and everything which is stated in Scripture is His Word, including the passages in Lev. and Rom. condemning homosexuality. The reason why Christ did not condemn homosexuality while present on this earth is because there were no homosexuals in Israel at that time. Nevertheless, Jesus affirmed that marriage is only between man and woman in Mt. 19:4 and Mk. 10:6, so homosexual marriage was never even on his mind.

I have seen a bit of your blogs and homepage, and I have noticed that you are a theological liberal. May I suggest you consider reading the whole of Scripture and obeying it? You believe in a so-called 'gospel of inclusion', yet your position is biblically untenable (i.e. Jn. 14:6; Rom. 10:13-17) and would have rendered evangelism superfluous, which would then made mockeries of the lives and ministries of the Apostles and the early Christians. Your position is thus blatently wrong and the Lord earnestly commands you to repent of your serious error, or you would have fulfilled the Scriptures according to Jude 4:

For certain people have crept in unnoticed who long ago were desginated for this condemnation, ungodly people, who pervert the grace of our God into sensuality and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

    And 1 Tim. 1:6 :

Certain person, by swerving from these, have wandered away into vain discussion, desiring to be teachers of the law, without understanding either what they are saying or the things about which they make confident assertions.

It is my hope that you repent of your heresies and turn to God who can alone save you from your sins.

  6. Hello Munchy,

welcome back to Singapore. I hope you are doing fine after being in the heartlands of immorality and decadence for ~ 6 months?

Anyway, with regards to Vincent's opening comment, it was meant to be sarcastic, not that hmosexuals are indeed heterophobic (perhaps some of them are). Hope that clarifies your point of contention.

  9. Jesus said: For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
    Matthew 15:19

For from within, out of men's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23All these evils come from inside and make a man 'unclean.' "Mark 7:21

It can't get any clearer than that.
