are they "dogmatic sermons," o...@Jenson,

are they "dogmatic sermons," or "doctrinal sermons"? I don't think I have a problem with preaching doctrines. Catechetical sermons are similar to "dogmatic sermons" in some sense, but at least for that you have the church's confession of faith and catechisms as THE template, which members are brought through in their membership classes (orDaniel Chttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00678184721218949112noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19775846.post-62564392707723874112015-12-04T03:18:05.894+08:002015-12-04T03:18:05.894+08:00Interestingly, printed sermons from a bygone era a...Interestingly, printed sermons from a bygone era are mostly "topical sermons" or - to use your definition "dogmatic sermons". That was partly due to the general public being Biblically literate. In fact, what you just described ("dogmatic preaching") is what the late John Stott advocated.

My previous pastor suggested that I preached topical sermons during Jenson Limhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12607566189820720661noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19775846.post-59629909309549627912015-12-03T18:07:23.357+08:002015-12-03T18:07:23.357+08:00@Jenson,

I also recognize preaching is an art just as much as it is a science, thus there is no "fixed," "true" style of preaching.

That said, I do not think we should assume people in the congregation are all "well versed in the Scriptures." From your description, that style (sometimes known as "topical preaching") is useful with those who are well versed in the Scriptures. For a younger congregation/church plant, the sensible route would be a good dose of "expository preaching".
Jenson Limhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12607566189820720661noreply@blogger.com
